1: Warm Neutral Interior Colour Schemes

Neutral interior colour schemes will always be popular because of their versatility, but they’re not the neutrals we’re used to seeing. Gone are the days of 50 shades of grey, and all-beige is falling flat too. Instead, we’re gravitating to neutrals with warm and sophisticated undertones, like green, ochre, blush, salmon or purple – and using plenty of contrasting shades, textures and organic materials to ensure our neutrals are not boring. In 2023, the warm neutral palette has some additions.  Rich brown-based colours — caramels, mustards, terracottas and clays — are great for adding contrast and warmth but not heat.

Neutrals colours with green undertones are increasing in popularity too, with some designers saying ‘green is the new grey’. Taupes with green undertones like Dulux New Neutral feel tranquil and balanced and are well-suited to Queensland homes.

2. Warm Whites

White remains a key 2023 interior paint colour because it’s so easy to inject warmth and personality into a space by bringing in other colours, textures and patterns. It’s also refreshing in a tropical climate and will probably never go out of style in Queensland. However, we’ve largely left behind cool whites for warm whites, and we’re adding more colour through accessories, artwork, and soft furnishings.

Natural materials, such as wicker, linen and rattan, are warm white’s perfect styling partners. For an updated Hamptons look, designers are using teals, creamy beiges, warm golds and muted blues instead of cool whites and blues. Warm white interior colour schemes also complement the beauty of timber architecture and allow statement furniture to shine. A timeless warm white like Whisper White provides the the perfect foundation for layering warm tones through furniture and soft furnishings.

3. Greens and Blues

Now grey is a trend that’s over, so we’re using use a lot of blues and greens to create areas of calm in our homes instead. Deep tones of green can create a dramatic backdrop for a room, while nature-based silvery greens feel cool, calm the senses and help create a sanctuary. People who are looking for something different and unique are going for the bolder shades – like forest greens, ultramarine blues and rich teals, which can look natural in morning light but moody at night.

Deep sea blues and teals are popular with homeowners who are looking for a bold colour that is still elegant and refined. Paired with seashell whites and natural wood, these hues can also have a calming effect. For inspiration on this interior colour scheme, see the Dulux 2023 ‘Balance’ palette which features some beautiful oceanic colours.

We’re also seeing a lot of earthy pinks and reds, corals and oranges used as accents with greens and blues. This is a great way to add warmth and works well in a hot climate.

4. Playful and Vibrant Interior Colour Schemes

Vibrant colours are the perfect antidote to life’s challenges and can bring any room to life. Last year, playful pastels dominated but in 2023, we’ve extended our comfort zone to brighter, more saturated shades, like warm yellow, playful pink and purple.

This interior colour scheme encourages a sense of fun, creativity and experimentation. A vibrantly coloured feature wall (yes they are back but see our article!) looks great with graphic, funky, wavy, checked, or geometric patterns. Reminiscent of the 60s and 70s, this colour scheme appeals to the young, and lends itself perfectly to kids bedrooms, recreational and eclectic spaces.

Although a playful vibrant colour scheme allows you to throw out the rule book to some extent, it will probably require a lot of white to create ‘breathing space’ and make it livable. For inspiration on this style, see the Dulux Revive colour forecast.

5. Deep and Dramatic Interior Colour Schemes

In 2023, we have been seeing a move to more dramatic hues after a few years of massive change. Deeply saturated colours found in the wild are on the rise, inspired by everything from tropical flowers to carbon. Dark and dramatic shades, such as deep charcoals and browns, are not only elegant and upscale when complemented with tonal furnishings and accessories, but they also bring a warm and comfortable feel to a space.

Designers also anticipate that jewel tones will be in demand and love the elegant moodiness they create. Think deep sapphire blues & ruby reds, amethyst purples, and citrine yellow-oranges. Layering deep jewel tones with contrasting finishes – like reflective surfaces (mirrors, glass and metal) against matte finishes – can create a dramatic dining space, or a gorgeous jewel-box powder room in a Queensland home.
