Painting a Queenslander: Before & After

Painting a Queenslander: Before & After

For years, Henderson St residents fought to stop developers from knocking down this classic Queenslander and building nine townhouses on the land. Finally, they succeeded. When the developers put the house back onto the market in 2021, there was no doubt that it needed more than a little love. Could painting this Queenslander save it?

Young Brisbane couple Michael & Rebecca saw through the dilapidated finishes to the home’s original quality, bought the home and took on the task of its restoration. They engaged Signature Painters to do a full interior and exterior restoration and repaint. Michael & Rebecca believed their peeling old Queenslander could be turned from a knockdown to a knockout – and they were right. Signature Painters was proud to be a Master Painters Excellence Awards finalist for our heritage restoration of their home.

Before & After Queenslander Exterior Painting

Before our team could dip a brush into paint, there was a huge amount of work to be done. The owners cleared the overgrown yard themselves and various trades took care of timber repairs, asbestos removal and wall resheeting. The windows were removed for restoration and a Dulux colour consultant was called in to advise on the perfect colour palette. As the ‘before’ photos show, the home’s exterior weatherboards needed a LOT of preparation. The badly peeling paint was of course lead-based.

Stripping a Queenslander lead paint removal

Our crew began the task of safely removing the toxic lead-based paint. They stripped the timber back to bare boards using specialist products, ‘wet sanding’ techniques and dropping the residue onto plastic sheet to avoid dust and contamination. Surfaces were then thoroughly filled, sanded and skimmed to get a perfect foundation, then undercoated. This was followed by further patching and priming, before painting the entire exterior to a smooth, glowing finish using multiple topcoats of semigloss.

As you can see, the beautifully restored warm neutral weatherboards and crisp white woodwork transformed the home. This kind of restoration can only be achieved by Queenslander painting specialists. Because of the work involved, it doesn’t come cheaply, but most would agree from the before & after painting photos, it has added huge value to this house!

Before & After Queenslander Interior Painting

The home’s interior was also very rundown and needed a lot of preparation. Before painting could begin, VJs had to be replaced, asbestos removed, and insulation added.

Our painters put a lot of elbow grease into achieving a smooth, glowing finish on the original doors and decorative woodwork. They completed multiple layers of filling, sanding and undercoating, before applying no less than 3 top coats of gloss enamel. Tackling the walls and ceiling, our team also expertly restored and spray-finished the home’s VJ panelling, and repaired extensive water-damage.

Just take a look at the Before & After Interior photos of this Queenslander now! It’s hard to overstate the transformation that the new, well-executed paintwork and light neutral colour palette achieved.

The living & dining room is now a far cry from its original state.

Its pure white colour scheme has an airy feel that celebrates the room’s space and height. Stunning pendant lighting makes the most of the high ceilings while relaxed furnishings finish the look.
